Last year Culdrose held an enthuisiasts preview day but I was not aware
of it and did nit attend. Having heard it was good I decided to take another
day off this year and go along, this I did today.
Typically the weather front promised for the mid afternoon duly arrived
and misty drizzle fell bringing visibility way down and cloud base too. When
we arribed we were told of the large number of aircraft that would be arriving
during our visit and that we would be able to take a hands on, close look
around them. Great we thought but, along with the weather came the
realisation that aircraft arrivals would not be taking place.
The BAC 167 Strikemaster did make it however just before the cloud base
fell and that was it. Of course at 1630, just when we were about to leave
the WX improved and some movements started but too late, we were on
our way back to the cars.
Still worth it, a chance to chat to some young Merlin pilots who were tasked
to be our guides.; Will I do it again next year? try and stop me! It was great
to get to walk right around the Seafire as previously only seen this one from
some distance.
Enjoy the photos. Interesting to note that there are nearly 20 Sea Harriers
on the base all tasked to the Dummy Deck school hence the tail flash DD.
All seem to still be fitted with engines and full kit too.
